What this site is, and what it is not

We are a small New Zealand outfit trying to make one narrow corner of insurance legible — and then get you to someone who can actually help.

The problem we are trying to fix

Insurance in this sector is not badly explained by accident. Renters are told to get “renters insurance” without being told that the most valuable part of it is the liability section. Landlords are sold “loss of rent” without being told it means two different things with wildly different limits. Both sides walk into disputes over damage without knowing that the Residential Tenancies Act already caps what a tenant owes.

None of that is complicated once someone writes it down plainly. So we wrote it down plainly.

How we make money

We are paid a referral fee by the broker if you go on to take out a policy through them. That is the whole model. It costs you nothing and it does not change your premium.

We are not paid by any insurer. The insurers we name are named because you would search for them anyway, and they are all marked direct only — meaning you buy from them yourself and we have no arrangement with them of any kind.

What we are not

  • Not an insurer. We do not underwrite anything and we cannot pay a claim.
  • Not a financial adviser. Everything on this site is general information about how cover and the tenancy rules work. It takes no account of your circumstances. The advice about what you personally should buy comes from the registered broker we introduce you to.
  • Not a comparison engine. We do not run quotes, and we deliberately do not publish a comparison table — there is a longer explanation of why, but the short version is that the products are not comparable line by line and pretending otherwise misleads people.
  • Not a lead pool. Your enquiry goes to one broker. It is not auctioned, and it is not sold to a panel who all ring you.

The brokers

The brokers we introduce people to are registered Financial Service Providers. They are local, they place this class of business regularly, and we have met them. They are the ones holding the licence and giving the advice — which is exactly as it should be, because they are the ones qualified to.

The test we apply is simple and slightly unfashionable: would we be comfortable sending a family member to this person. If a broker will not tell someone that they are already adequately covered and do not need to spend anything, they are not a broker we want to introduce anyone to.

How we handle being wrong

Everything factual on this site traces to a source — legislation for the rules, insurers' own pages for their products, with retrieval dates. Where we could not verify something, we say so on the page rather than filling the gap with a plausible guess. There is a public list of the things we could not establish, and a correction log.

How we source this site →

If you find something wrong here, tell us and we will fix it and log it. That is not a courtesy, it is the standard.

Not sure what you actually need? Ask someone who does this all day

Tell us what you are renting and what you own. We will introduce you to a registered local broker who can look at it properly — including telling you if the cover you already have is enough. No sales pitch, no hard sell.

Free to you. We are paid by the broker only if you take out a policy — it does not change your premium.
